O'SULLIVAN STUNS MURPHY WITH BRAVE FIGHT-BACK

20 Oct 2007 17:02:00
www.worldsnooker.com

Ronnie O'Sullivan came from 5-2 down to beat Shaun Murphy 6-5 and reach the final of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix.

In one of the best matches of recent seasons, Murphy made two centuries in winning five of the first seven frames, only for O’Sullivan to hit back by reeling off the last four frames with four breaks over 60.

The world No 5 from Chigwell continued his bid to end a drought of 31 months without a ranking title and now faces Marco Fu over 17 frames in Aberdeen tomorrow, Fu has won five of his previous ten meetings with O’Sullivan.

This is not the first time O’Sullivan has made an unlikely comeback in a semi-final at the AECC - in 2000 he came from 4-0 down to beat Graeme Dott 6-5.

Today’s contest started slowly with a fragmented 43-minute opening frame, Murphy winning it after O’Sullivan had missed a long pot on the final yellow.

A run of 55 put the Malta Cup champion 2-0 up then the Rocket responded with an 88, potting 11 reds and blacks before missing a tricky thin cut on the 12th red along a side cushion.

O’Sullivan made a 67 in frame four but when he missed the last red, Murphy gained a snooker then cleared with 35 to lead 3-1.

That looked to be a pivotal point of the match as world No 3 Murphy pulled away with a superb 138 total clearance. O’Sullivan responded with a 98 only for Murphy to go 5-2 up with a 108.

But two-times World Champion O’Sullivan showed determination in abundance as he rolled in 75, 72 and 62 to win the next three frames for the loss of just 21 points.

Murphy had the first clear opportunity in the deciding frame but missed a risky cut on the black on 13. O’Sullivan needed just one chance, making 62 to move to the snookers required stage. He soon potted the last red to secure the result.

"It was a good come back, I kept plugging away," said O'Sullivan, who was relatively garrulous in his post-match press conference after a near-silent approach for most of the tournament.

"I felt some nerves and I knew that anything was possible so I kept hanging in there to see what would happen. You're not human if you don't feel tension sometimes. It was a strange kind of game but I cued well and did well to win it in the end."

The enigmatic 31-year-old partially explained his limited comments to media this week by adding: "If I said what I really thought I'd get myself into trouble. I'm not the most politically correct person and I have to hold back and restrain myself sometimes because what I really think is not appropriate."

Rotherham-based Murphy said: "Ronnie held himself together superbly at the end and that's what champions do. At 5-2 I was in a strong position but I have played enough snooker to know that someone of Ronnie's class still needs putting away.

"I didn't think I'd got it won by any means and I can't be overly critical of myself. Perhaps I played the wrong shot going for the black in the last frame - it was a low percentage shot."

O'SULLIVAN RACES THROUGH

14 Oct 2007
www.worldsnooker.com

Ronnie O'Sullivan made it four wins out of four at the Royal London Watches Grand Prix to secure his last 16 berth.

O’Sullivan saw off Gerard Greene 4-2 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre to guarantee his progression to the knockout phase from Group B.

The Rocket, who won this event in 2004, has not won a ranking tournament for 31 months but has looked in excellent form so far this week.

After winning the opening frame on the pink, O’Sullivan made breaks of 135 and 68 to go 3-1 up.

He missed a simple blue with the frame at his mercy in frame five, but completed the job in the next after a safety error from Greene on the final yellow.

Greene remains favourite to finish second in the group having won his previous three games. He only need to avoid a 4-0 defeat to Dominic Dale in his final match to qualify.

In Group D, Marco Fu kept his alive his chances of progressing by coming from 3-1 down to beat Shaun Murphy 4-3.

The Hong Kong player produced some superb break-building in the last three frames with 81, 103 and 101.

Murphy and Fu now have three wins each with Ding Junhui, Stuart Bingham and Stuart Pettman on two points.

In tomorrow afternoon's crunch matches, Murphy plays Ding, Fu plays Bingham and Pettman plays Ben Woollaston.

"Tonight was such a big game for me," said Fu, who reached the final of this event back in 1998. "I lost 4-3 to Stuart Pettman from 3-1 up earlier today so it was nice to recover from that against Shaun.

"I'm hitting the ball well, I'm just making a few mistakes, but tonight I was able to win frames in one visit. If I can play like that in my last game tomorrow I should have no problem."

FORD CRASHES TO THREE-TON ROCKET

13 Oct 2007
www.worldsnooker.com

Ronnie O'Sullivan had three centuries against Tom Ford at the Royal London Watches Grand Prix, but was made to work hard for a 4-3 victory.

The Rocket trailed 3-1 against Leicester’s Ford but won the last three frames to build on his 4-0 defeat of Mark Joyce.

SAGA Insurance Masters champion O’Sullivan opened with a break of 123 but scored just 53 points in the next three frames as Ford rattled in 46, 99 and 75.

Back came Chigwell’s O’Sullivan to 3-3 with 100 and 119. Both players made mistakes in the decider and it came down to a safety battle on the brown.

O’Sullivan trailed 35-48 but laid a tough snooker and Ford, attempting to hit a fine edge, missed it three times. He finally made contact but left the brown over a middle pocket, allowing O’Sullivan to clear to the pink.

The two-times World Champion, who hasn’t won a ranking event since the 2005 Irish Masters, had little to say in his post-match press conference, describing his three centuries as "good". Asked whether he was surprised by Ford’s shot selection on the final brown, O’Sullivan added: "I couldn’t really see it from where I was."

Ding Junhui suffered his second 4-1 defeat of the day when he lost to Stuart Bingham. The Chinese player opened with a run of 69 but Basildon’s Bingham hit back to win the next four frames with best efforts of 61, 65 and 89.

Steve Davis recovered from a 4-0 defeat to Gerard Greene in his first match by beating Roewe Shanghai Masters champion Dominic Dale 4-3. Davis made a top break of 73 and compiled a 57 in the decider.

DOTT SET FOR BOX OFFICE LAUNCH

30 Jul 2007 16:36:00
www.worldsnooker.com
Head to the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on Wednesday (August 1) for your chance to meet snooker star Graeme Dott, as tickets for the Royal London Watches Grand Prix go on sale.

Dott, last year’s 888.com World Champion and the current world No 2, will be selling tickets to customers and signing autographs from 2.15pm to 3pm.

The Royal London Watches Grand Prix, one of snooker’s major ranking tournaments, runs from October 13 to 21 and returns to the AECC having been staged there for the first time last year.

It features star players such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, defending champion Neil Robertson, Steve Davis and Scottish trio John Higgins, Stephen Hendry and Dott.

There is a unique quick-fire round robin format which allows fans to watch all of their favourite players for the price of a single ticket.

For example, during the round robin phase, a £10 daytime ticket provides access to three sessions of snooker with six tables in play during each session!

Last year’s final was a sell out so book early to avoid disappointment. A limited number of half price tickets for some sessions are also available for early bookers.

From Wednesday, get details and book your seats by visiting www.ticketmaster.co.uk or calling 08444 779000.
