Rocket unlikely to retire after Crucible win

ESPN staff

Ronnie O'Sullivan will take an extended break but is likely to return to the table next season.

O'Sullivan secured world title No. 4 with an 18-11 demolition of Ali Carter. He came into the final with questions to answer about his future after inferring he may retire after the World Championship at the Crucible.

After wrapping up victory, O'Sullivan suggested he may be back again for a crack at title No. 5, but wants an extended break to recharge the batteries.

"I am going to take six months off because family has become the most important thing in my life," he said. "I know there is still snooker left in the tank but leeway has to be given to the players. Let's make it fair."

O'Sullivan paid tribute to sports psychologist Dr Steve Peters, who has been credited with getting the genius back on track.

He said: "I wouldn't be sitting here now if it wasn't for Steve. He's not a psychologist, he's an expert scientist. If I was Man City, I'd go and buy him. I've never needed anyone to tell me how to play snooker, but Steve has taught me my brain is a machine."

RONNIE O’SULLIVAN: HAVE A REFFIN' WORD IF PETER EBDON'S ON A BIG BRAKE!

20th April 2012

By Hector Nunns

RONNIE O'SULLIVAN has piled the pressure on referee Eirian Williams ahead of his Crucible clash with Peter Ebdon.

‘The Rocket’ takes on pedestrian potter Ebdon in the first round of the Betfred.com World Championships in Sheffield on Monday.

Three-time champion O’Sullivan, 36, and 2002 winner Ebdon have got form in snooker’s most famous arena.

An infamous 2005 quarter-final saw O’Sullivan throw away an 8-2 lead as the snail-paced Ebdon crushed his resolve to win 13-11.

‘The Essex Exocet’ was left asking the crowd the time and digging nails into his face as Ebdon took five minutes over one break of 12.

Ebdon, now 41, even faced allegations of gamesmanship after that tie – and O’Sullivan says officials must step in to save their game as a spectacle.

The world No.13 said: “The referees have the power to warn players over slow play – but they hardly ever do.

“There have to be limits. I can run a mile in five minutes, and my fastest maximum 147 break was only 20 seconds longer.

“The referee and others will be aware that if it gets ridiculously slow, then they can intervene.

“In that 2005 match he stuck in there – so credit for that, he got a result – but he didn’t play well. Neither of us did.

“I like to be involved, get some rhythm and am an instinctive player, rather than a methodical one.

“I see the shot quickly, and it can be hard seeing your opponent not doing it.

“But you just have to deal with it. Unless the referee tells someone to speed up there’s nothing you can do.

“I could have complained to the referee in 2005 – but I didn’t, and I think I made my point in other ways.

“To be honest, I was relieved it was over in the end, even though I lost.”

Ebdon has nine ranking event titles to his name, including his Crucible triumph a decade ago.

And the world No.21 arrives in form after winning the China Open, his first trophy for three years.

But O’Sullivan said: “I watched Peter’s semi-final against Ding Junhui in China and it wasn’t good to watch.

“The referee should have stepped in.

“There were Chinese fans falling asleep, but maybe the referees are reluctant to get involved.

“If you are trying to create a buzz about the game and get people to watch, it isn’t helpful.

“Players get warned for messing around and time-wasting in football, they get yellow cards. In golf the players can get put on a timer to speed them up.”

O’Sullivan also took a pot-shot at seven-time champion Stephen Hendry.

The Scot was due back in the UK last night after exhibitions in China and plays Stuart Bingham when the tournament starts tomorrow.

O’Sullivan said: “It takes three days to feel right after a long-haul flight like that. He won’t be at his best, won’t feel great and will suffer from jet lag.”

Ronnie O’Sullivan was speaking on behalf of The Money Shop, his official partner. Their payday loans take care of life’s little emergencies. Get up to £500 in cash today at 475 stores nationwide.
