Higgins Scraps To Down Rocket

www.worldsnooker.com

John Higgins edged a 5-4 victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan in the clash of the titans at the Bank of Beijing 2009 World Snooker China Open.

The tussle between two of snooker's all-time greats didn't quite live up to its billing, as both players surprisingly missed a host of easy chances in the closing stages. But that will not bother Higgins as he came out on top to set up a semi-final with Ryan Day.

Tomorrow's best-of-11 semi will be a repeat of October's Royal London Watches Grand Prix final which the Wizard of Wishaw won 9-7.

World Champion O'Sullivan started impressively with a break of 97 in the first frame but Higgins won the next three with 55, 73 and 75.

The Scot opened frame five with a run of 62 but O'Sullivan fought back to steal it on the black. A 44 clearance gave Higgins frame seven before O'Sullivan levelled in a scrappy eighth.

The Rocket faltered on an easy black early in the decider and Higgins made 39 before failing on a close-range green. O'Sullivan slotted home a long red to give himself a clear opporunity, only to over-cut a black to a top corner by several inches. This time Higgins made no mistake, adding 32 to secure his third semi-final in the six ranking events he has contested this season.

"It was exicting, but the standard was really bad," admitted two-times World Champion Higgins. "I didn't know what I was going to miss next, so I'm sure the crowd felt the same. I was bad, and just lucky that Ronnie was a little bit worse. If I play like that tomorrow, Ryan will beat me.

"I'm one step closer to the title but still far away. I've only won one tournament in China and that was in Shanghai so I would love to win one in Beijing."

Chigwell's O'Sullivan said: "It was rubbish. We were both terrible. I didn't feel like potting anything, let alone clearing up. I didn't think I'd be able to leave John chances, but I gave him many and he still missed. It was a night to forget."
